Advanced Technology IOL Cataract Surgery
At the time of cataract surgery, the cataract is replaced by an Intraocular Lens (IOL) which focuses light on the retina. Drs. Kugler and Schlichtemeier specialize in cataract surgery with Advanced Technology IOLs that improve the range of vision and reduce patient’s dependency on glasses or bifocals after surgery. The available lens options are discussed below.
Presbyopia-Correcting IOLs
Traditionally, patients have required prescription bifocals in order to see after cataract surgery. Modern lens technology has been developed, however, that improves patients’ ability to see up close without reading glasses or bifocals! Dr. Schlichtemeier and Dr. Kugler are certified to use all available presbyopia-correcting IOLs. There are several different versions of this type of IOL technology, and your surgeon will make a specific recommendation for you and your specific visual needs at the time of your cataract evaluation.

The ReSTOR lens is one of the presbyopia-correcting IOLs available to reduce the need for reading glasses. The small rings seen in the image on the right help the eye focus on objects that are at near.

The Crystalens is one type of lens that improves near vision. The lens moves forwards and backwards depending on whether the eye is trying to focus at near or distance.
Astigmatism-Correcting (Toric) IOLs
Astigmatism means that the eye is not perfectly round, like a basketball, but rather is irregularly shaped, like an American football. Astigmatism affects 50-75 percent of the general population and most patients with astigmatism are aware that they have it. Historically patients with astigmatism have required glasses to see well after cataract surgery. However Toric IOL technology is now available that reduces astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery.

The AcrySof Toric IOL is an example of an astigmatism correcting IOL. The marks on the surface of the IOL are aligned with the axis of astigmatism within the patient’s eye.
Choosing the best lens option for your eye
Modern cataract technology offers a wide arrange of IOL technology choices, which can often seem overwhelming to patients. Dr. Kugler and Dr. Schlichtemeier are experts in advanced IOL technology and will recommend the lens technology that is best suited for each patient’s eye and visual needs.
