ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens Surgery - Omaha, Nebraska and Iowa

Cataracts

For many people, developing clouded lenses, known as cataracts, is a natural part of the aging process. Luckily, there are many treatments available for cataracts, and they are very safe and effective. The most common treatment for cataracts involves the replacement of the clouded lens with an artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens. The two most common types of intraocular lenses are monofocal lenses, which correct vision in one segment of the visual range, and multifocal lenses, which correct a range of visual errors. Dr. Schlichtemeier now offers Crystalens® accommodating lenses, Toric lenses to correct astigmatism, and the multifocal AcrySof® ReSTOR® intraocular lens from his office in West Omaha, Nebraska near Iowa.

AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL

Monofocal intraocular lenses can provide patients with clear distance vision, but most patients still need bifocals or reading glasses to clearly see near objects. New AcrySof® ReSTOR® intraocular lens surgery from LaserVision Correction in Omaha, Nebraska near Iowa, can give patients clear vision at all distances without the need for bifocals or reading glasses.

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed, successful, and safe surgery performed in the United States today. It is also relatively simple for the patient; however, it is very complicated for the doctor. It is performed on an outpatient basis and takes only a few hours from preparation to recovery. The surgeon will make a small incision, and then remove the cataract. Once the cataract is removed, the surgeon can insert the ReSTOR® intraocular lens. Following the surgery, the patient will be prescribed eye drops to aid the healing process and prevent infection. Most patients can return to normal activities the day after surgery.

Crystalens®

Crystalens® accommodating intraocular lenses are unlike many other types of intraocular lenses because they work with your eye muscle, allowing you to continually change focus for clear vision at all distances. The lens flexes and changes shape as controlled by the eye muscle, just like the eye’s natural lens for more natural focusing ability. Crystalens® lenses not only treat cataracts that cause clouded vision, but they also treat presbyopia – the loss of near and intermediate vision which is common for people age 40 and over. For many patients, the replacement of the clouded natural lens with a Crystalens® lens eliminates their dependence on glasses or contacts.

Toric Lens Implants

In the past, patients who had both cataracts and astigmatism would need to wear glasses or undergo an additional procedure in order to achieve optimal vision after cataract treatment. Now, with toric lens implants, we can treat both conditions simultaneously. Toric lens implants are designed to treat astigmatism, which causes blurry and distorted vision, in addition to the clouded vision experienced with cataracts. Similar to other types of intraocular lenses, toric lenses are used to replace the eye’s natural lens to treat cataracts; however they also improve the eye’s shape, resulting in clearer vision.
