Pioneering - a History of Innovation

Dr. Schlichtemeier was the first ophthalmologist in Nebraska to perform epikeratophakia and keratomileusis. He learned keratorefractive surgery (the forerunner to LASIK) in 1981 at the Jules Stein Eye Institute with Drs. Elander, Villasenor, Krumeich, and Barraquer. Serving all of Iowa and Nebraska from his office in Omaha, LASIK surgeon William Schlichtemeier became one of the first 10 surgeons in the world to perform epikeratophakia in 1982, with impressive results. He studied radial keratotomy at the Dean McGee Eye Center with Dr. Jim Rowsey and Dr. Jim Hayes and has been doing RK since 1983.

In 1994, shortly after the FDA approved the LASIK procedure for vision correction, Clarkson Hospital in Omaha received the third laser ever produced for the purpose. It was there that Dr. Schlichtemeier began treating patients with laser vision correction.
