LASIK Vision Correction Surgery: Easier Than It Sounds

Published by Lance Kugler, MD on June 6, 2014

Anything with the word ‘surgery’ in it is always a little scary, but modern vision correction is one of the safest, and most-often performed medical procedures in the world. In fact, vision corrective procedures have become so fine-tuned that less than 1% of patients experience any LASIK complications whatsoever.

LASIK Technology

The word LASIK actually refers to the technical process of procedure (reshaping the inner layer of the cornea with an excimer laser), and has been performed since the early 1990s. Since it’s inception, there have been many progressions in LASIK technology over the past couple decades that have dramatically improved the accuracy of treatment, including the use of Wavefront-Optimized technology to improve the visual quality after surgery. Another recent technology advancement is the use of a second laser, called a femtosecond laser, to perform the first step of LASIK treatment.  This makes for a completely safer and more accurate procedure than traditional LASIK.  Omaha’s latest and greatest technology is exclusively available at Kugler Vision.

People are often surprised when they find out how quick the LASIK procedure is. Of course there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, but for patients the entire process is very simple. After a pre-operative evaluation to determine your eligibility, the actual surgical procedure is quite fast, typically less than 15 minutes, and most patients experience little to no pain or discomfort. The sensation of pressure is common, but the numbing eye drops make the procedure quite comfortable. A post-operative evaluation schedule will ensure you stay on track for a quick and easy recovery.  In fact, most patients can drive themselves to their next day appointment – without glasses or contacts!
