PRK

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), also called Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA), uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and correct vision. In contrast to LASIK, no flap is made in the cornea with PRK. Instead, the epithelium is removed from the surface of the cornea prior to the laser treatment.

PRK was the first procedure to use the excimer laser, and was developed several years before LASIK. It has a long, established history of safety and efficacy. In fact, several studies have concluded that the results of PRK are just as good or better than the results of LASIK. PRK is an excellent alternative to LASIK, particularly for patients who are not suited to have LASIK for a variety of reasons, including thin corneas.

PRK has a longer recovery time than LASIK, and patients may have some discomfort for 48-72 hours after surgery.

At the time of your evaluation, Drs. Schlichtemeier and Kugler will determine the best procedure for your eyes and make a recommendation. Call or Email to schedule a free consultation!
