For patients who are unable to have LASIK or PRK, the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is an available option. Unlike traditional contact lenses that are positioned on the surface of the eye, the Visian ICL is positioned inside the eye between the iris (the colored part of the eye) and the natural lens, where it stays indefinitely. However, it can be removed from the eye if necessary.
The ICL procedure does not require any reshaping of the corneal surface, so it may be safely performed in patients with irregular corneas or corneas that are not able to have laser surgery. It is also an option for patients who are nearsighted beyond the range of treatment available with LASIK or PRK.

Because the Visian ICL is positioned between the iris and natural eye lens, the lens is invisible to both the patient and observers. Also, its positioning in the eye allows the eye to maintain normal iris function and promotes stability.
The recovery for the Visian ICL is quick and pain-free, and may be as little as one day, due to the very small size of the opening required. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort, and many times go back to work the next day.
